I walked into our make shift clinic today to find my patient from yesterday that we sent home sitting in the postpartum area holding her little girl! I waved excitedly and she smiled. I congratulated her and her husband and they allowed me to take some pictures. The postpartum area was FULL of patients. About five had had babies on the shift before me. On top of discharging those five after they all had their checks and newborn baths done we had about seven women in labor! Three delivered before I left and I got to chart one of the births.
If you didn't think all of that was chaotic I was also the only American on shift. That means there were no students working my shift which was surprising but that left me with four Filipino midwifes who did not speak English all shift! Lets just say I was very lost and I can probably count on both hands the number of sentences I heard in English. They were all directions for me of course. At one point I was told to monitor a patients contractions which I had never done before. I knew what to do and it wasn't suppose to be hard but my patient did not speak English either! I never knew when the contraction ended because she wouldn't tell me. Also while I was charting a birth I had trouble hearing because 1. they talk soft. 2. They have an accent. 3. The guards were in the room building curtains holders=hammering nails. 4. The beds are so close together I kept hearing the birth beside me going on and kept bumping into the people on the other side of the curtain. It WAS chaos!!!! I made it through the eight hour shift though! Time to unwind and go to bed!
Goodnight All!
One happy Mom!
I had just walked to the clinic so I was a little sweaty if you are wondering why I am so red.
The birth room.
Five beds in a medium sized bedroom :/
This was before the wooden curtain dividers were built.
